Drosophila and zebrafish models added to SFARI Gene

SFARI is pleased to announce an expansion of the SFARI Gene animal models module to include Drosophila melanogaster and Danio rerio.

Although still not as frequently used as mice to study autism, flies and zebrafish have notable advantages that are increasingly being exploited in autism research. As of now, the database lists 55 genes for Drosophila models and 24 genes for zebrafish models (Table 1), in addition to several models induced by biological or chemical agents. All are expertly curated by the staff at MindSpec Inc. and include annotations of the genetic mutation/inducer, descriptions of accompanying phenotypes and reports of phenotypic rescues where appropriate.

Each gene may have been studied in multiple ways, with each getting a separate line in the database (for example, there are 56 different Drosophila models of Fmr1). The complete list for each species alone can be obtained by typing the name of the species in the search bar on any of the animal models’ module pages.

New fly and fish models will be included in every quarterly update of the database and will be highlighted on the SFARI Gene news page.

SFARI Gene Update

We are pleased to announce some changes to the ongoing curation of the data in SFARI Gene. In the context of a continued effort to develop the human gene module and its manually curated list of autism risk genes, we are modifying other aspects of the site to focus on the information that is of greatest interest to the research community. The version of SFARI Gene that has been developed until now will be frozen and will remain available as “SFARI Gene Archive”. Please see the announcement for more details.
